Cardinal Eliminated at Sherwood Cup

The Cardinal concluded play at the Sherwood Cup in Westlake Village, Calif., today as Stanford was eliminated in the singles consolation bracket and saw its final doubles team lose in the second round. The Cardinal's doubles team of Eric McKean and Richard Wire won their first round match for the only Stanford victory on the day. They were eliminated by the top-seeded team in the tournament in the second round.
In singles, Stanford saw all five of its players participating in the consolation round lose in the first round. Kevin Kaiser, Paul Morrissey, Blake Muller, David Ryan and Jeff Zeller were defeated today in straight sets. After McKean and Wire scored an 8-2 victory over Whit Livingston and Chong Wong of USC in the opening round of doubles play, they were beaten by the top-seeded team of Phillip Grundler and Ben Kohlloeffel of UCLA, 8-3, in the second round.
Stanford's other two doubles teams were defeated in the first round. Andrew Ekelov and Mike Gurman of UCLA handed Muller and Morrissey a 9-8 loss. The Cardinal duo entered the tournament seeded fourth. Jeremy Drean and Mathieu Dehaine of UCLA beat Kaiser and Zeller, 8-5 in the opening round.
Stanford, ranked No. 9 in the first ITA team rankings of the season, returns to action with its 2007 home opener on January 27 vs. No. 25 Boise State at 1:00pm at the Taube Tennis Center.
