Cougars' Upset Bid Falls Short in 63-55 Loss to No. 10 Stanford

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Freshman JJ Hones scored a season-high 17 points to lead No. 10 Stanford past Washington State 63-55 Saturday.
Brooke Smith added 12 points and career highs of 10 assists and seven steals for Stanford (14-3, 7-0 Pac-10). Despite the absence of All-American guard Candice Wiggins due to a sprained ankle, the Cardinal improved to 43-0 all-time against Washington State.
Stanford bolted to 10-0 and 14-2 leads. The Cougars missed 10 of 11 shots in the first 9 minutes and shot 32 percent for the game. Both teams had 20 turnovers.
The Cardinal led 24-8 before Washington State closed the first half with a 12-4 run to trail 28-20 at the break. Hones scored 14 points in the second half to help Stanford pull away.
Stanford had beaten Washington State by an average of 29 points in 10 games since the Cardinal's last single-digit win over the Cougars, an 87-78 decision in 2001.
