USC Men Push Into Sherwood Semis
Jan. 13, 2007
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. -- The USC men's tennis team put forth a strong showing in the opening of the Sherwood Cup in San Diego this weekend. Juniors Kaes Van't Hof and Dejan Cvetkovic both powered their ways into Sunday's semifinal action with a sweep through singles play, and Van't Hof also has teamed up with Robert Farah for doubles play to make a move into the doubles semifinal as well.
USC came close to sending three players into the singles semifinals, as senior Jamil Al-Agba also pinned up two early wins before pulling out of his quarterfinal match to rest an injury. Cvetkovic made short work of his quarterfinal opponent Michal Kotka of Baylor with a 6-4, 6-2 win, while Van't Hof went three sets with Bassam Bedias of Pepperdine to pull off a 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-1 victory for a spot in the semis. Cvetkovic faces Pepperdine's James Lemke in his Sunday semifinal match, and Van't Hof goes up against UCLA's Haythem Abid to set up a potential all-USC final.
In doubles play, Farah/Van't Hof were the lone doubles duo out of four USC pairs to power out of the opening Round of 16. Farah/Van't Hof topped Boise's Boswell/Sarapanish 8-6 to start, then beat UCLA's Elkov/Gurman in a ferociously tight 9-8 (1) decision in the quarterfinal. Farah/Van't Hof will face another UCLA pair -- top-seeded Grundler/Kohlloefl of UCLA on Sunday in the doubles semi.
Three other Trojans joined Van't Hof, Cvetkovic and Al-Agba with first-round wins in singles action. Newcomers Gary Sacks and Robert Farah, along with senior Garrett Snyder, all topped their respective opponents out of UCLA to push into the Round of 16. Sacks beat UCLA's Mike Gurman 6-0, 4-6, 6-0; Farah beat Bruin Mike Look 6-1, 7-5; and Snyder beat Phillip Grundler of UCLA 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
