THIS WEEK
A competitive Pac-10 gymnastics season is now underway, as five teams grace the preseason Top-25 Coaches poll. According to the weekly national rankings, which are based on total season average, the Pac-10 boasts five teams among the Top-25 this week (No. 5 UCLA, No. 8 STANFORD, No. 11 ARIZONA STATE, No. 12 OREGON STATE and No. 16 ARIZONA). Look for exciting competition this week as Conference match-ups begin... ARIZONA STATE begins its season by traveling to STANFORD, CALIFORNIA travels to OREGON STATE, UCLA along with San Jose State will travel to Cal State Fullerton, while WASHINGTON travels to face-off against No. 2 Utah on Fri., Jan. 19. Two days later, UCLA hosts ARIZONA.

PAC-10 GYMNAST OF THE WEEK
UCLA junior Tasha Schwikert has been named Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for January 8-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Schwikert, hailing from Las Vegas, Nev., recorded season highs in the all-around and on all four events in the meet against Stanford on Mon. Jan. 15. Schwikert won the all-around with a 39.575 and scored victories on the floor exercise (9.925) and vault (9.900). She also led the Bruins as the highest all-around finisher against Utah, scoring 39.225 to place third. Thus far this season, Schwikert is averaging team-highs on vault (9.867), floor (9.900), and all-around (39.183).

UCLA is currently ranked seventh in the national standings. UCLA's next meet is against San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton on Fri. Jan. 19. The Bruins return home just two days later in a match-up against ARIZONA on Sun. Jan. 21.

PAC-10 NOTES

  • ARIZONA - Arizona (194.975) opened its season with a nail bitting win over then-No. 22 Michigan State (194.925) on Jan. 12... Senior Jamie Holton , won a share of the floor title (9.875) and shared the vault title with teammate sophomore, Bree Workman (9.900)... Junior Danielle Hicks , turned in a beam score of (9.850) to earn herself second place honors... The Wildcats will be in action again this Sun., Jan. 21, at UCLA.

  • ARIZONA STATE - Arizona State did not compete this past week. The Sun Devils' next meet will be against Stanford in Palo Alto on Fri., Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

  • CALIFORNIA - Califorina did not compete this past week. The Bears' next meet will be against Oregon State in Corvallis on Fri., Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

  • OREGON STATE - Despite opening its season with a solid team score, Oregon State (193.800) fell to then-No. 3 Florida (196.850) on Fri., Jan. 12... Sophomore Jami Lanz finished second in the all-around. Freshman Mandi Rodriguez scored second on the vault with a score of 9.850... The Beavers will host California at Gill Coliseum this week on Fri., Jan. 19 .

  • STANFORD - The Cardinal (194.600) were downed by then-No.1 Georgia in their 2007 opener on Sat., Jan 6. Junior Liz Tricase , began the season with another top score on the bars with a (9.925). On Mon., Jan. 15, No. 8 Stanford (196.975) looked impressive in its win over then-No.4 UCLA (195.525). Tricase , once again took top honors on the bars with a (9.925)... Junior Tabitha Yim tallied a 39.500 to finish second in the all-around competition. She had victories in the vault (9.900) and beam (9.950)... Stanford's next meet is against Arizona State in the Burnham Pavilion on Fri., Jan. 19.

  • UCLA - UCLA topped Washington in its season opener, 194.000-188.175. Freshman, Anna Li, started out her career with an all-around victory scoring 39.000... Senior Michelle Selesky , had a career night winning the floor exercise with a career-high (9.900) and placing third on vault with a personal-best (9.825). Despite hitting 24-of-24 routines without a fall, the Bruins fell to then-No.2 Utah 196.325-195.975... Junior Tasha Schwikert , led UCLA, placing third in the all-around scoring 39.225... Monday, the Bruins dropped a dual meet to Stanford, 196.975-195.525. Schwikert , won the all-around with a season-high 39.575... UCLA will face San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton on Fri., Jan. 19 and two days later return home to face Arizona State at Pauley Pavilion onSun., Jan. 21.

  • WASHINGTON - Washington (188.175) lost its season opener to Pac-10 rival UCLA (194.000) on Sat., Jan. 6... Sophomore Ashley Houghting posted a (9.725) on the beam tying for first place... The following week, the Huskies (193.000) came from behind to win their home opener over Utah State (191.400) at Bank of America Arena on Jan.12. The Huskies swept first and second place in all four events... Senior Kelly McDonald led the Huskies finishing second on the beam (9.850) and bars (9.850)... Freshman Kristen Omori tied for second place honors on floor with a score of 9.825... The Huskies return to action on Fri., Jan. 26 at Bank of America Arena where they will take on Stanford at 7 p.m.
