No. 8 Stanford Hosts No. 11 ASU In Home Opener

Stanford, Ca - After facing two of the nation's top teams (#1 Georgia and #5 UCLA) on the road, the eighth-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team opens its 2007 home season on Friday (1/19/07, 7:30 p.m.) against another national power, the eleventh-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils ... The meet will be held at Burnham Pavilion ... Last Monday (1/15/07), the Cardinal looked impressive with a 196.975 - 195.525 victory at UCLA ... This was indeed a great performance as the Cardinal hit 24-of-24 routines and notched the second-highest team total in the national thus far ... Team victories in all four gymnastics events (Bars, Beam, Floor Exercise, Vault) and top honors by Liz Tricase (Bars, Vault), Tabitha Yim (Beam, Vault) and Carly Janiga (Floor Exercise) powered the Cardinal victory at Pauley Pavilion ... On Vault, Bars and Beam, four Stanford athletes finished in the Top 5 ... On Jan. 6, Stanford traveled to Athens, Georgia, to face the two-time defending NCAA champion Georgia Bulldogs ... A crowd of 9,002 fans watched the two high-powered teams compete, and the Bulldogs showed their strength with a 197.375 - 194.600 victory over the Cardinal ... Stanford had several excellent season-opening performances ... Liz Tricase, one of the top gymnasts on Bars last year, displayed she will be a candidate for top national honors with a first place performance of 9.925 ... On Beam, sophomore Heather Purnell, a member of the 2004 Canadian Olympic team, finished third with an effort of 9.850.

Coaches CornerHead coach Kristen Smyth is in her sixth season at Stanford ... Smyth has chalked up a record of 107-36 during that span ... Smith has coached Stanford to four NCAA post-season appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, 2006) and an appearance in the NCAA Super Six twice (2002, 2004) ... Stanford has won the Pac-10 championship twice (2004, 2006) during her tenure, and coached the Cardinal to the NCAA Regional title in 2002 and 2004 ... In her five previous seasons at Stanford, Smyth has coached six Stanford gymnasts to 36 All-American honors.

Sun Devil Saga
Twelve Sun Devil gymnasts return from a 2006 team that finished ninth nationally ... This year, ASU is ranked eleventh in the pre-season ... The Sun Devils are led by team captain April Boone and fellow seniors Cassandra Jusino and Lauren Powell ... Boone returns as one of the most consistent All-Around gymnasts on the team ... Last season, Boone recorded her first perfect 10 on Vault and averaged 9.700 on every event ... Arizona State will host the Pac-10 Championship this year.

Finished second with a season-best score of 9.900 on Beam at UCLA (1/15/07) ... Produced a fourth place finish on Bars (9.825) at UCLA (1/15/07) ... Also produced the same score in the season opener at Georgia (1/6/07).

Has competed in both meets this year on Vault ... Had a seaosn-best 9.725 at UCLA (1/15/07).

Allyse Ishino, Freshman, Santa Ana, Ca
Is sidelined indefinitely after recently being diagnosed with having two pulmonary emboli (blood clots in her lungs).

Carly Janiga, Freshman, Paradise Valley, Az
The freshman has looked impressive in the early part of the 2007 season ... Captured first place honors on Floor Exercise (9.925) at UCLA (1/15/07) ... Had a season-best 39.275 to finish third in the All-Around at UCLA (1/15/07) ... Finished second on Bars (9.875) at UCLA (1/15/07).

Nicole Ourada, Sophomore, Germantown, Wi
Finished third on Floor Exercise (9.900) to help lead Stanford to victory at UCLA (1/15/07) ... Finished fourth on Bars (9.825) and on Vault (9.850) at UCLA (1/15/07).

Alex Pintchouk, Junior, Mt. Lauren, NJ
Has competed on Floor Exercise in both meets this year with a season-best 9.800 at Georgia (1/6/07).

Aimee Precourt, Junior, Pasadena, Tx
Has a season-best 9.800 on Beam which placed her fifth at UCLA (1/15/07).

Heather Purnell, Sophomore, Metcalfe, Ontario, Canada
Finished fourth in the All-Around (39.025) in the season opener at Georgia (1/6/07) ... Scored a season-high 9.850 to finish third at Georgia (1/6/07).

Blair Ryland, Freshman, Woodbridge, Va
Made her collegiate debut with a score of 9.675 on Vault at Georgia (1/6/07).

Liz Tricase, Junior, Itasca, Il
Helped lead Stanford to victory at fifth-ranked UCLA (1/15/07) with victories on Bars (9.925) and Vault (9.900) ... Also produced a season-best 9.925 on Bars in the season opener at Georgia (1/6/07).
