Cal Rips Off Road Win Over Oregon State
Jan. 18, 2007
Marcel Jones had 29 points for the Beavers, who have lost 22 of 24 against the Bears dating back to 1995-96.
Eric Vierneisel had all 13 of his points in the second half for California (12-6, 4-2 Pacific-10). Anderson, who also had eight rebounds, had his first 18 points before halftime.
Cal led by six with 1:42 left, hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final 17.4 seconds, and then held on when the Beavers couldn't get the tying shot off before the game ended. Freshman Jack McGillis' 3-pointer from the right side swished, but he let go of it after the horn.
Oregon State, shooting 63.6 percent from the free throw line coming in, made just 12 of 22 free throws. Sasa Cuic had 13 of his 15 points in the first half for Oregon State (10-9, 1-5).
Anderson scored 18 of Cal's last 22 points of the first half - including 11 in a row. The Beavers scored just one point in the final 4:40 and Cal led 32-31 at the break.
Oregon State freshman Roeland Schaaftenaar came in early in the second half and held Anderson scoreless for several minutes. Meanwhile, Vierneisel, who hadn't attempted a shot in the first half, took over the Cal offense.
Vierneisel hit four 3-pointers in the first 11:48 of the second half and the Bears led 55-52.
Then it was Ubaka's turn. He scored 11 in a row for the Golden Bears, hitting a 3 with 1:42 left to give them a 70-64 lead.
Jones did his best to get Oregon State back in it, with two 3-pointers and a layup to cut the lead to 73-72.
