Men's Tennis Roll in Opener Against Eastern Washington

Jan. 19, 2007

SEATTLE - The No. 18 Washington men's tennis team came out fired up and beat Eastern Washington 6-1 in the season opener for both schools on Friday night. The Huskies swept the doubles and won five of the six singles matches to easily handle their cross-state rivals.

The No. 35 nationally ranked doubles team of Patrik Fischer and Michael Ricks started the match off right for the Huskies, cruising by Eastern Washington's team of Daniel Pez and Keithan Gregg 8-2. The Chu brothers, Daniel and David, followed suit, clinching the doubles point for the Huskies with an 8-4 win over Patrick Millican and Jonathan Davis.

The No. 1 doubles team of Andy Kuharszky and Alex Slovic started out slow, but rallied to win 8-6 against Pannhara Mam and Kyle Schraeder. Slovic now has 70 doubles wins, tying him for third most in Husky history. He is three wins short of overtaking Eric Drew for the all-time career record.

Kuharszky, a junior from Budapest, Hungary, paved the way for the Huskies in singles. He dispatched Pez 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles spot. After dropping the first game of the first set, Kuharszky won 28 straight points and never looked back.

David Chu was the next Husky to finish, taking out Art Karas 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 singles match. Daniel Chu clinched the match for the Huskies, winning 6-4, 6-1 over Schraeder. Michael Ricks cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 singles match over Gregg.

Slovic, ranked No. 98 nationally in singles, won 6-1, 6-1 over Eastern's No. 1 player, Mam, to continue his assault on the Husky record books. He has 82 singles wins in his career, one shy of tying Marius Lunde for sixth most all-time in Husky history.

Fischer, came out nervous for the Huskies and dropped his singles match 7-6 (2), 6-3 to Millican. Fishcer was the only Husky that had never played in front of a Husky home crowd during his career.

The Huskies return to action tomorrow, with a 2:00 p.m. match against Idaho at Nordstrom Tennis Center. Admission is free and there is complimentary soft drinks and pizza served during the break between doubles and singles.
