No. 1 Stanford Gets by No. 14 Bruin Swim & Dive, Defeats UCLA 130-105
Jan. 19, 2007
The No. 14 UCLA Bruin swim and dive team fell to the top team in the country, No. 1 Stanford, 130-105 on Friday afternoon. The Bruins fell to 6-2, 2-2 Pac-10, while the Cardinal remained undefeated with the victory. Seniors Sara Clark and Katie Nelson, along with junior Nicolette Teo led the Bruins with individual event wins.
'The team competed well and a lot of people swam season best times, which is very good for January racing,' said Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher. 'We'd like to win, but I think we did a lot of things well today. Stanford is the No. 1 team in the nation and we saw why that is true today. They are good in everything. Their freshman class is great and the team as a whole was very impressive. We did well within ourselves today and that was good.
'Katie Nelson probably had the most exciting race of the day in the 500 Free,' noted Gallagher. 'She finished third earlier in the 1000 and was pretty upset because she doesn't like to lose, but came out hard in the 500. It was basically two against one and Katie ended up with the victory. It was a very exciting race for her and our team'
Nelson edged out Stanford's Elizabeth Durot in a time of 9:50.90, an NCAA 'B' qualifier and just .02 off her season-best. She also was third in the 1000 Free (9:56.62).
Teo won the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:16.04, also an NCAA 'B' qualifier.
Clark led a Bruin sweep on three-meter with her score of 264.00. Sophomore Marisa Samaniego was second (245.33) and senior Amanda Blong was third (218.18). Samaniego and Blong also finished second (267.98) and third (256.88), respectively, on one-meter to lead UCLA on that event.
Swimming season-bests in the meet were - Silke Nowotzin in the 200 Free (1:51.72) and 500 Free (5:01.23); Shannon Hackett in the 200 Free (1:53.69) and 200 Fly (2:03.63); Hope Thurman in the 200 Fly (2:04.74); and Isabell Fischer in the 200 Back (2:04.46).
The Bruins will continue their NorCal road trip on Saturday when they face the California Golden Bears at 12:00 pm in Berkeley, CA.
