UCLA's Brewer, Brooks Selected to Baseball America's Top-50 Freshman List

Los Angeles - Baseball America has rated UCLA freshmen pitchers Charles Brewer and Gavin Brooks as the No. 15 and 25 incoming freshmen, respectively, in the nation. Brewer, the 2006 Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, emerged from fall workouts as one of the Bruins' top starting pitchers. Brooks, an AFLAC All-America selection, is among several pitchers working for a spot in the starting rotation.
Brewer is slated to begin the 2006 season as the Bruins' No. 2 pitcher. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., resident compiled a 33-0 record in four years at Chaparral High School, including a 19-0 mark as a three-year varsity letterwinner. Brewer capped his senior season with an 11-0 record, including a 1.51 ERA and four saves as both a starter and closer.
An 18th-round selection in the 2006 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Brewer earned EA Sports first-team All-America honors and Louisville Slugger All-America accolades as a senior. The Chaparral High standout also was named the 2006 Arizona 4-A Region Student Sports Player of the Year.
Brooks, a 6-foot-3-inch left-handed pitcher, will compete for a spot in the starting rotation this spring. A powerful two-way player at Rancho Buena Vista High School, Brooks was a 2005 AFLAC All-America selection. The Vista, Calif. native pitched eight scoreless innings as a senior, totaling 12 strikeouts and allowing just two hits. He posted a .375 batting average and a .573 on-base percentage with two home runs, 11 RBI and 24 runs scored as a senior.
A talented scholar-athlete, Brooks earned San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic accolades with a 4.1 GPA as a junior and a 4.2 GPA as a senior. He was ranked the No. 33 prospect among the top-100 high school seniors in 2006 by teamonebaseballl.com.
No. 13 UCLA opens its 2007 season against No. 23 Winthrop on Friday, Feb. 2 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is 6 p.m.
