Jan. 20, 2007
Provo, Utah -- Washington lost its season-opening dual match at No. 30 Brigham Young on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars (2-0) won 6-1 against the Huskies (0-1), the second-consecutive year that Washington has lost its season opener to BYU.
Junior Allison Rainey (Mercer Island, Wash.) was the only Husky to score a point for Washington, winning her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-3 against Dolly Chang.
The Huskies doubles team of Melinda Wong and Tara Simpson won the No. 3 doubles match 8-3 to even the doubles at one match apiece, but Lauren Jones and Sofia Holden clinched the doubles point for BYU with an 8-5 win over Mathilde Cor and Joyce Ardies.
The Cougars increased their match lead to 2-0 when Holden, a two-time All-Mountain West Conference member, beat Wong 6-2, 6-1. Kristina Doerr beat UW's Victoria Brymer in straight-sets to increase the Cougars' lead.
BYU clinched the match when All-Mountain West Conference member Anastasia Sourkova closed out Tara Simpson in the No. 2 singles spot. Simpson dropped the first set, but rebounded to shutout Sourkova in the second set before losing 6-1 in the third.
Cor played No. 1 singles for the Huskies and pushed Jones to three sets before losing 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Rainey followed that match with her victory and Ardies retired from her match due to an undisclosed injury with a 4-2 lead in the second set.
