Kubishta Sets School Record at National Pole Vault Summit
Jan. 23, 2007
RENO, Nev. - The 2007 track and field season got underway for the Arizona State University program over the weekend with several members of the team competing in the 17th National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. Five women and three men competed in the national event that also featured numerous international elite vaulters.
The women were led by April Kubishta, who cleared 4.15m (13-07.25) to finish second overall in the top section of the collegiate division. Her mark not only provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships (March 9-10), it also improved on her own school record. The previous record, which was set and broken four times during the 2006 indoor season, was 4.14m (13-07.00) heading into the meet.
In the same section of competition, Cara Walker cleared 3.75m (12-03.50) to tie for ninth place overall. Alana Waterford tied for eighth place in Section 3 with her clearance of 3.40m (11-01.75) while Carly Gietler (3.25m/10-08.00) and Lisa Navarro (3.00m/9-10.00) each tied for eighth place while competing in Section 4 and Section 5, respectively.
On the men's side, Brandon Glenn posted the top mark for the Sun Devils as his clearance of 4.95m (16-02.75) in the top collegiate section earned him seventh place overall. Both Corey Phallen and Joe Fazio competed in Section 3 of the event with both clearing 4.75m (15-07.00). Based upon fewer misses in the competition, Phallen won the section while Fazio was second.
The Sun Devils open their full slate of competition this weekend as many athletes will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for a pair of meets. The multi-event athletes, including defending indoor NCAA pentathlon champion Jacquelyn Johnson, will compete in the Zia Classic Multi-Events Thursday and Friday before the remaining members of the travel party will compete in the Lobo Classic on Saturday.
