WSU Women's Basketball Falls to USC, 65-47

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State Cougars (5-15 overall, 1-9 Pac-10) lost their chance to split with the USC Women of Troy (12-8 overall, 6-4 Pac-10) as USC defeated WSU 65-47 at the Galen Center.
Katie Appleton and Dani Montgomery were the leading scorers for the Cougars. Appleton recorded 13 points and collected six rebounds while Montgomery's 12 points marked her fourth double-digit scoring game of the season.
Kate Benz recorded seven rebounds.
For the Women of Troy, Eshaya Murphy posted 18 points while Jamie Hagiya and Allison Jaskowiak added 16 and ten points, respectively. USC jumped out to a ten point lead to start the second half after Jaskowiak knocked down back-to-back three point shots. The Women of Troy led by as many as 13 points until an Ebonee Coates lay-up started a Cougar run. Adriane Ferguson knocked down a three-pointer to put WSU within seven and Dani Montgomery shaved the USC lead to a mere five points with a lay-in off a Katie Appleton pass.
The rest of the second half would belong to the Women of Troy who held the Cougars to 32 percent shooting from the field.
The Cougars exploded to a 6-2 lead at the start of the game, kicking things off with a block by Marisa Stotler. USC took the lead for the first time with 15:46 remaining, but Washington State came right back with a Benz jumper. Coates found Montgomery under the basket to tie the score at 12 with 12:59 left in the first half. Appleton followed that with a successful three-point attempt and the Cougars were back on top by three. Washington State pulled to within three points after Montgomery sank two free throws with 2:46 on the clock but USC used a 6-2 run to end the first half and went into halftime leading 31-24.
As a team, the Cougars shot 34.5 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Women of Troy 21-16 in the first half.
Washington State concludes their LA road swing at UCLA Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
