Cardinal Drops Season Opener to Boise State, 5-1
Jan. 27, 2007
After a one-hour rain delay, Stanford was beaten in its 2007 dual match opener as No. 25 Boise State came to the Taube Tennis Center and upset the No. 9 Cardinal 5-1. The Broncos Luke Shields, ranked No. 15 in the nation, beat Stanford's All-America Matt Bruch at No. 1 singles to lead the charge. Boise led 5-0 as they recorded victories at Nos. 1-4 singles to secure the win.
Both Bruch and Richard Wire, playing No. 2 singles, won the first set in their matches against the Shields brothers, Luke and Clancy, but saw the Broncos come back to take the final two sets and win the match. Bruch, playing for the first time this season after recovering from an injury, lost to Luke Shields 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Wire, a freshman from Essex, England, recorded a 6-1 win in the first set against Clancy Shields, who is ranked No. 94 nationally, but could not close out the match as Shields came back to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Boise won at No 3, No. 4 and No. 6 in straight sets. Stanford's Blake Muller was defeated at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2 to the Broncos' Piotr Dilaj, Eric Robertson beat Cardinal freshman Paul Morrissey at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and Brent Werbeck beat Keven Kaiser, Stanford's third freshman in the starting lineup, 6-3, 6-3.
Stanford's lone win came at No. 5 when senior Eric McKean defeated Blake Boswell in a hard fought match, 7-5, 7-6. McKean, from Pacific Palisades, Calif., missed all of the 2006 dual match season due to a wrist injury.
The two teams began doubles play, with Stanford leading in two of the three matches, but rain forced the matches to be stopped.
