Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Jan. 29, 2007 -- Alysia Johnson becomes the first member of the California track and field teams to capture Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Johnson led the Golden Bears to one of their top performances in recent years at the Dan DeHart Invitational on Saturday in Albuquerque. It was the second indoor meet of the year for the Golden Bears and Johnson debut on the track this season.
The junior won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.48 to set a new school indoor record. Her time was also just eight-hundredths of a second off of the NCAA regional provisional qualifying time. In addition, Johnson anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team which logged a time of 3:44.07.
Johnson, from Canyon Country, Calif., was an NCAA All-American as a freshman in the 800 last season when she ran a personal-record 2:03.04. The 20-year old improved on that time last June in Indianapolis, when she took fourth place in the 800 meters at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in a lifetime-best time of 2:01.80, which is also the second-best time in Cal history. Last July in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, Johnson won the 800 meters in a meet-record 2:03.87 at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships.
The Golden Bears will be back in action this Saturday with the Cal All-Comers Meet.
