No. 18 California Earns A Victory Over Santa Clara
Jan. 30, 2007
BERKELEY - When the No. 18 California men's tennis team earned the doubles point after three thrilling matches against Santa Clara, Tuesday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center, it really set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. The Golden Bears defeated the Broncos, 6-1, after winning five singles matches later in the day.
Cal won two of the three doubles matches. On the No. 1 court, seniors Tyler Browne and John Pettit were facing defeat, trailing Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields of Santa Clara, 7-4. The Bears would rebound and take the next five consecutive games to win the match, 9-7.
The other two doubles matches had to be decided in the tiebreaker set. Freshman Kallim Stewart and junior Ken Nakahara won the deciding doubles match with a 9-8 (6) victory over the Broncos' Brian Brogan and Robert Gallman. Stewart and Nakahara needed a comeback effort in their match as well. Trailing 6-2, they won the next five out of six games to tie the match at seven, before eventually grabbing the win.
The momentum from winning the doubles point carried over into the singles matches, as four of the Bears' five singles victories came in straight sets. Sophomores Geoff Chizever and Eoin Heavey each earned a singles win on the day. Chizever beat Tommy Hicks, 6-0, 6-3, while Heavey knocked off Robert Gallman, 6-0, 6-4.
19th-ranked Pierre Mouillon dropped the first set of his match against Jan Macek, 6-4, and trailed 4-1 in the second set. The junior would fight back to tie the set at four. After falling behind 5-4, Mouillon won the next three games to take the second set, 7-5. In the tiebreaker set, Mouillon never trailed, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. He would win the set, 10-7, and claim the hard-earned victory in the process.
Browne and Nakahara each had strong singles matches as well. Browne shut out Brogan in the first set of his match and would later win the match, 6-0, 6-4. Nakahara dominated his singles match against Jay Wong, winning by the score of 6-1, 6-0.
Cal opens up Pac-10 play this weekend when it travels to Los Angeles to square off against No. 4 UCLA on Friday and No. 44 USC on Saturday.
