USC Opens 2007 Season With 6-4 Win Over Cal Poly
Jan. 30, 2007
LOS ANGELES - The USC Trojans exploded for five runs in the second inning Tuesday to give first-year head coach Chad Kreuter his first collegiate win in a 6-4 victory against the Cal Poly Mustangs at Dedeaux Field. Freshman shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI while junior left fielder Lucas Duda (Riverside/Arlington HS) went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer for the Trojans.
Sophomore Tommy Milone (Saugus/Saugus HS) was effective in his first start for USC, going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts for the win. Senior closer Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) threw a perfect inning for his first save of the season and 21st of his career. Koss is fourth all-time at USC and needs one save to tie Dan Hubbs (1991-93) for third place.
Cal Poly (0-4) tried to rally from the five-run deficit and held off the Trojans thanks to a strong relief effort by left-hander Derrick Saito. Saito threw five no-hit innings while striking out 10 batters and not allowing a walk. Mustang shortstop Kyle Smith went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI while right fielder Grant Desme had a 2-for-4 evening with two RBI.
Green tripled to right in the bottom of the first and scored on junior Matt Cusick's RBI single to right. The Mustangs evened the score in the second after Kyle Smith hit a two-out single up the middle.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, USC scored five times to break the game open. Castillo walked and advanced to third on center fielder Nick Buss' single to center with Buss moving to second on the throw. Green hit a two-run single to center, followed by a walk to Cusick before Duda's towering three-run homer to right for a 6-1 lead.
Desme led off the sixth with his second home run of the season, hitting a solo shot to center. Cal Poly added another run in the seventh off freshman reliever Kevin Couture when Smith tripled to center, plating Ryan Lee. Desme came through again to make it a 6-4 USC advantage with an RBI single, but Couture retired Wes Dorrell on a fly out to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Cal Poly had a runner at first with one out, but USC reliever Shawn Olsen got Logan Schafer to ground out into the 6-4-3 double play.
USC will host Long Beach State on Friday (Feb. 2) in a 7 p.m. game at Dedeaux Field. The series with the 49ers continues on Saturday (Feb. 3) with a 1 p.m. start at Blair Field before the series finale back at Dedeaux Field on Sunday (Feb. 4), beginning at noon. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com. Gametracker live stats will be available for all three games with video webcasts for Friday and Sunday's games.
