Charters And Lastrapes Named To USA Softball Top-50 National Player Of The Year Watch List

Jan. 31, 2007

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, and USA Softball have announced the initial watch list for the Sixth Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. University of Washington second baseman Dominique Lastrapes and junior shortstop Ashley Charters are listed as potential candidates for the esteemed award.

This award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.

Lastrapes is named to the watch list for the third time, and is a two-time All-American. She ranks eighth on the UW all-time career list with a .426 on-base percentage, while her .357 career batting average ranks ninth and 35 doubles rank 10th. Last season, Lastrapes ranked second on the squad with a .353 average, while her 67 hits ranked sixth in the Pac-10 and her 13 steals ranked eighth. She also ranked second in the team with 20 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games.

Charters is named to the watch list for the first time and was a third team All-American last season. She ranks fourth on the UW all-time list with a .368 career batting average, while her 60 career steals rank seventh. Charters led the team with a .368 average last season and ranked second in the Pac-10 with 75 hits and 27 stolen bases, which also ranked 18th nationally. She led the squad with 27 multi-hit games, including five games with three hits.

The 2007 Pre-Season Watch List is comprised of 50 players, representing 33 schools and 11 conferences.

The ASA will announce its 25 finalists on April 4. A player does not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top-25 finalist, but once the Top-25 is named, the remaining finalist must be selected from that list.
