Bears Edge Past Rams, 4-3, in First Round of Indoor Championships
Feb. 1, 2007
MADISON, Wis. - Despite dropping the doubles point, the No. 11 California women's tennis team earned a hard-fought victory over No. 12 Virginia Commonwealth, in the first round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championships this morning. The Golden Bears (4-0), who entered the tournament as the eight seed, picked up four singles wins to take the match, 4-3, at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
'We played an indoor team,' Cal head coach Jan Brogan said. 'They practice indoors all the time and their style of play is perfect for indoors. (Zsuzsanna) Fodor was down, but she played smart, fought hard and prevailed. Stephanie (Kusano) was the only player who was at the top of her game today.'
Although it wasn't the match decider, No. 27 junior Cristina Visico's victory over Vera Petrasvitch was the turning point of the match. In the tiebreaker set, Visico was down 6-3 and rallied to win the set and the match, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8).
Fodor earned Cal's second win of the day by defeating Marianna Yuferova, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
After the Rams took a 3-2 lead, Cal won the last two singles matches. On the third court, No. 14 Freshman Nina Henkel tied the match with a victory over Maria Klokotzky, 6-1, 6-1. Junior Stephanie Kusano clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Viktoria Konstantinova on the fifth court.
The 12th-ranked doubles tandem of Henkel and sophomore Daron Moore picked up a doubles win, as it beat Petrashevitch and Tatsiana Uvarova, 9-7.The victory marked the fifth time in the last six years that Cal has advanced to the quarterfinal round. The Bears are the first team to give VCU (4-1) a regular season loss since 2005.
Tomorrow afternoon Cal will square off against No. 1 Stanford in the quarterfinals. The match will take place at 3:30 p.m. CT.
'Although there are a lot of non-conference opponents we'd like to play in this tournament, I'd like to get an early look at Stanford,' Brogan said. 'We're in an environment where none of us are indoor teams.'
