USC Men Open Pac-10 Play This Weekend
Feb. 1, 2007
The No. 43 ranked USC men's tennis team holds a 3-0 overall record as it prepares to kick of Pac-10 play this week. USC's Pac-10 action begins at home, with Marks Stadium matchups set for 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Trojans face the Cardinal on Friday (Feb. 2) and the Bears on Saturday (Feb. 3).
The Trojans have yet to yield a point, pinning up a trio of 7-0 nonconference decisions entering Pac-10 matches with No. 19 Stanford and No. 18 California. Stanford has one ranked doubles team -- #32 Muller/Morrissey -- and has played just one dual match so far this season. The Cardinal fell 5-1 to Boise State on Jan. 27. Eric McKean grabbed Stanford's point in the match with a singles win at the No. 5 position.
California starts its road trip with a 3-0 record, beating UC Davis (6-0), St. Mary's (5-1) and Santa Clara (6-1) before starting up Pac-10 play at UCLA on Friday. The Bears have Pierre Mouillon ranked #19 in singles in the opening ITA rankings (released Jan. 9).
In those same latest rankings, USC freshman Jason McNaughton is ranked No. 91 in singles. Last season, USC lost two tight matches to Stanford, falling 4-3 at home and in Palo Alto. USC's matches with Cal last year were similiarly frustratingly close. The Bear beat the Trojans 5-2 and 4-3 last season in Pac-10 play.
