Bears Open Pac-10 with Loss to No. 4 UCLA

LOS ANGELES - The No. 18 California men's tennis team opened up Pac-10 play Friday afternoon against fourth-ranked UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif. The Golden Bears were swept 7-0, suffering their first defeat of the season.
The day started promising with two Cal doubles teams leading early, both by the score of 4-1. It was the duo of sophomores Geoff Chizever and Eoin Heavey who earned the only win of the day for the Bears, as it knocked off Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol, 8-3. The 18th-ranked tandem of Mathieu Dehaine and Jeremy Drean for UCLA overcame deficits of 4-1 and 7-5 to beat juniors Pierre Mouillon and Ken Nakahara, 9-7.
In singles, the Bruins won five of the six matches in straight sets. No. 5 Ben Kohlloeffel, the reigning NCAA singles champion, beat No. 19 Mouillon, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Tyler Browne led in the first set of his match against Abid, but Abid came back to win the match, 7-5, 7-5.
Nakahara was the only Bear to force a tiebreaker set. However, he couldn't get the win, as he lost to Surapol, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0.
Cal (3-1) looks to return to its winning ways tomorrow afternoon when it faces USC at 1 p.m.
