No. 13 UCLA Baseball Edges No. 23 Winthrop, 2-1
Feb. 2, 2007
Los Angeles - Senior Tyson Brummett allowed one run and six hits in 8.0 innings to earn the victory as No. 13 UCLA defeated No. 23 Winthrop in the season opener for both schools Friday evening at UCLA's Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Tied 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, senior Will Penniall reached base on a pinch-hit double. Sophomore Ryan Babineau skied a pop-up to second baseman Phil Carey, who dropped the ball, allowing Penniall to score from second.
UCLA senior right-hander Brant Rustich closed the game for the Bruins to earn his first save of the season. Winthrop's late rally fell short, as first baseman Louis Ullrich struck out with two outs and runners at first and third in the final frame.
A highly-anticipated pitching duel between UCLA veteran Tyson Brummett and Winthrop ace Alex Wilson turned out to be just that. Brummett recorded six strikeouts while walking just one batter. Both teams added one run in the first inning before each starter held their opponent scoreless. Wilson lasted 5.2 innings, registered five strikeouts and did not give up an earned run. Junior Ryan Mullins took the loss for Winthrop.
Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Designated hitter Chris Carrara singled in the hole at shortstop and advanced to third on Carey's ensuing single to right field. Tommy Lentz's double-play groundout to third base plated Carrara.
UCLA answered in the bottom of the inning after sophomore Brandon Crawford reached base on a single and scored from third base four batters later on a pass ball.
UCLA and Winthrop continue their three-game series on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m. Senior Paul Schmidt will start for the Bruins, and junior Ryan Schwartz will toe the rubber for the Eagles.
