Cougars Split Doubleheader

Feb. 3, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - The WashingtonState women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to the Nevada Wolfpack, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.  The Cougars would avenge the earlier loss with a night cap win in over Idaho, 7-0 to conclude the doubleheader.

In the first match that lasted roughly six hours, the Cougars (5-1 overall, 0-0 Pac-10) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after coming back in doubles play against the Wolfpack (2-2 overall, 0-0 WAC).

Nevada captured the first doubles match as Caroline Bailly and Mary Mizyuk upended WSU's Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven, 8-1.  However, the Cougars stormed right back in the No. 2 slot as senior-freshman duo Amy Toth and Ashley Spicer cruised by Laetitia Tan and Ly-Huong Dinh, 8-2.

In the deciding doubles match, WSU's Aleksandra Stefanova and Bianca Selaru found themselves down 6-2.  After tying the match at six, Selaru and Stefanova forced a tie break set, which they eventually win, 9-8 securing the doubles point for WSU.

In singles play against the Wolfpack, Nevada captured wins in the No. 1 and 2 slots, to take a 2-1 lead.  Senior van de Ven helped the Cougars back on track with a three-set defeat against Ly-Huong Dinh, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.  Selaru, fresh off her two hour doubles match, fell in her contest in three-sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 by Bach-Lan Pham.

Aleksandra Cekic put the Cougars in great position in her straight-set victory over Audrey Bardot, 6-3, 7-6, which tied the match at three.  In the final singles match, Stefanova battled against Laetitia Tan, but her comeback fell short, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.

Against the Idaho Vandals (0-1, overall, 0-0 WAC), WSU got off to a great start by sweeping doubles play.  Burduli and van de Ven found their groove as they eased by Efrat Leopold and Mariel Tinnirello, 8-1 in the No. 1 slot.  Spicer and Toth earned their second doubles victory of the day with an 8-2 win.  Selaru and Stefanova completed the sweep after their 8-4 victory in the No. 3 slot.

WSU's Stefanova set the pace for WSU in the second match by defeating Lauren Shrubb, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot.  Selaru added to WSU's lead with her straight-set win over Leopold, 6-1, 6-1.  With the Cougars leading the match 3-0, Toth secured WSU's fifth victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tinnirello in the No. 1 slot.  The Cougars would protect their flawless performance with the following three matches ending in straight-sets.

The Cougars will have a short break as they prepare to host their final double header of the season against MontanaState and SacramentoState, Saturday, Feb. 10.
