Long Beach State Defeats USC, 5-3, To Even Series
Feb. 3, 2007
LONG BEACH, Calif. - TJ Mittlestaedt's two-run triple in the second inning lifted the Long Beach State 49ers to a 5-3 win against the USC Trojans in nonconference action at Blair Field. Bryan Shaw closed out the game for the 49ers with the save as he retired all four batters he faced.
Long Beach State improves to 1-1 overall while USC is now 2-1 on the season.
Robert Perry and Jason Tweedy had two hits each for the host Dirtbags.
USC freshman starter Brad Boxberger went five innings, allowing four runs (all unearned) on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He also had three errors in his collegiate debut, two of them coming on pickoff attempts.
Both teams took advantage of fielding errors to score in the first inning. With Grant Green at first, Matt Cusick hit a ground ball to Long Beach State second baseman Matt Cline, who bobbled the ball and threw it away at first to put runners at second and third. Left fielder Lucas Duda followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right as USC took the early 1-0 lead.
The Dirtbags answered in the bottom half when Shane Peterson hit a two-out ground ball to second. Cusick's throw pulled first baseman Derek Perren off the bag and Long Beach State's Jason Corder made them pay with a two-run homer to left.
Hector Estrella tied the game at 2-2 when he led off the second inning for the Trojans with a solo shot to left, but the 49ers answered with two more unearned runs in the second. Tweedy hit an infield single and Cline reached on a sacrifice bunt when Boxberger was unable to field the ball cleanly for the team's third error of the game. With two outs, Mittlestaedt put the 49ers ahead for good with the two-run triple.
Perry singled home a run in the sixth, giving the 49ers a three-run lead at 5-2. USC got the run back in the seventh when Perren led off with a double, advanced to third on Estrella's ground ball and scored on Robert Stock's first collegiate RBI with a single to left.
The series concludes tomorrow with a noon start at Dedeaux Field. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast via video webcast on usctrojans.com, along with Gametracker live stats.
