Devanei Hampton - Women's Basketball
Feb. 5, 2007
Feb. 5, 2007 -- Devanei Hampton collects her second Muslce Milk Athlete of the Week honor, and the fifth for women's basketball, as the sophomore forward anchored a huge week for the Golden Bears, averaging 18.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a pair of victories over NCAA Tournament teams.
The highlight of the week was what head coach Joanne Boyle called 'the biggest win in program history.' Hampton tallied 22 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to lift the Bears to a 72-57 decision over No. 8 Stanford on Sunday. It was the first Pac-10 loss of the season for the Cardinal and it snapped the Cardinal's 17-game winning streak as well as a 51-game home conference-winning streak. Hampton posted 15 of her points after halftime to help the Cal erase a one-point halftime deficit. After an almost five-minute scoreless stretch for both teams in the second half, the Oakland product made two straight baskets to keep her team ahead 51-46 with 6:12 to play. A jumper and two free throws by Hampton extended Cal's margin to 57-48 with 2:48 on the clock. Hampton's strong interior defense was also decisive in the victory as her numbers almost beat Stanford's three tall post players, who combined for 24 points and 18 rebounds.
Last Wednesday, Hampton took charge in the second half to lift the Golden Bears to a 58-51 triumph over UC Riverside, the current first-place team in the Big West Conference. She grabbed a key rebound and sank two free throws after she was fouled with the Highlanders trailing only 52-50 with 4:35 left in the game as she finished with a game-high 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. The win over UC Riverside was the Bears' 24th straight non-conference home victory.
California hosts Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Washington State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
