USC Back In Win Column With 5-2 Decision At Loyola Marymount
Feb. 6, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Tommy Milone (Saugus/Saugus HS) went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 5-2, at George Page Stadium. Senior Paul Koss (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) picked up his third save of the season and 23rd of his career to move into third place on USC's all-time list. Koss needs three saves to tie Brian Nichols (1985-88) for second place.
USC improved to 3-2 on the season while Loyola Marymount is now 3-1.
Sophomore Nick Buss (Clinton Township, Mich./San Diego Mesa CC) went 3-for-5 for the Trojans while freshman right-hander Kevin Couture (Coronado/Coronado HS) threw two perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts.
J.J. Owen walked to lead off the Trojans' second and moved to second on freshman catcher Robert Stock's infield single. Senior third baseman Hector Estrella came in and delivered an RBI single up the middle. A passed ball charged to LMU catcher Sean Dovel moved the runners 90 feet and a wild pitch by Hernandez scored Stock with Estrella going to third. Buss then delivered a perfect two-out bunt down the third base line to give USC the 3-0 lead.
A leadoff walk in the USC third added another run as Cusick would score on Derek Perren's groundout to second. The Trojans loaded the bases in the fourth, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the threat and the Lions would respond in the bottom half of the inning. LMU loaded the bases against Milone and scored twice, one on an RBI single by Angelo Songco and a bases-loaded walk to Ryan Wheeler.
After Justin Bunkus was hit by a Milone pitch in the sixth, Michael Glomb singled to put the tying run at first. Milone came back and struck out pinch hitter Elvis Herrera and DeAndre Miller as USC held on to the 4-2 advantage. Owen added an RBI single in the ninth for USC's final run.
