Feb. 6, 2007
SEATTLE-- The University of Washington women's volleyball team will be the feature of KCTS Documentary 'Generation IX' to air Thursday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. The film will have an encore showing on Monday, Feb. 19 at 1 a.m. In Seattle, KCTS is on channel 9 and the KCTS HD broadcast is available on cable channel 109.
The documentary, produced by veteran Seattle journalists Jack and Leslie Hamann with KCTS Television, explores what it means to be a female athlete more than three decades after the passage of Title IX through the experiences of three UW volleyball players: Jill Collymore, Christal Morrison and Courtney Thompson.
The film follows the women of the University of Washington's volleyball team in the spring, summer and fall of 2006, and devotes much of its time to their 10-day tour of China.
Through the documentary viewers will also meet Title IX pioneer Trish Bostrom, University of Washington Senior Women's Administrator Marie Tuite, and volleyball coaching legend Dr. Carl McGown.
Washington coach Jim McLaughlin, a McGowan pupil, is also featured in the film and addresses the misconception that men and women athletes somehow differ.
McLaughlin's wife, Margaret- an athlete, coach and mother- also appears in the film and discusses the notion of girls' sports becoming over-organized and over-specialized.
