Bears Ranked Ninth In the Nation
Feb. 7, 2007
BERKELEY - After starting the season 4-2, the California women's tennis team jumped up in the ITA national team rankings from No. 11 to No. 9. The last time the Golden Bears were in the top 10 was last April, when they were ranked sixth.
Cal has gotten its season off on the right foot, winning its first four matches. The first three victories were shut outs against Sacramento State, San Diego and San Diego State. The fourth win for the Bears was a 4-3 victory against Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the ITA Indoor Team Championships.
Stanford fell from the top spot in the rankings after Georgia Tech defeated the Cardinal last weekend in the Indoor Championships, snapping Stanford's winning streak at 89. The Yellow Jackets took over the No. 1 ranking, while the Cardinal dropped one spot to No. 2.
The other three teams in the top five are: No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 Florida and No. 5 USC. The Trojans are the only other Pac-10 squad to join Cal and Stanford in the top-10 rankings.
The Bears welcome USC to Berkeley on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 12:00 p.m. The next match for Cal is Friday, Feb. 16, against No. 15 UCLA at 1:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Hellman Tennis Center.
