Feb. 8, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 5 USC women's tennis fought through a tight doubles point and cruised to a sweep of visiting Cal Poly on Thursday at Mark Stadium, posting the Trojans' fourth straight win with the 7-0 decision. The Women of Troy were on the winning end of three tiebreakers in the match to help secure the victory.
After #23 Sarah Fansler / Dianne Matias cleaned up at No. 3 doubles with a, 8-1 victory, the Trojans and the Mustangs had all-out battles on their hands at the No. 1 and 2 doubles positions. At No. 2 Anca Anastasiu / Lindsey Nelson fought back to grab the doubles point for USC with an 8-6 win over Blalock/Filip. Meanwhile, at No. 1, #15 ranked Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink overcame a deficit to Cal Poly's Erickson/Wang to tie up the match 8-8 before pulling out of an 0-3 hole in the tiebreaker to win the match 9-8 (4).
In singles action, #95 Judy DeVera pounded out a 6-0, 6-1 win over Devin Peek to kick off a string of straight-set sweeps for the Women of Troy. That No. 6 singles win was followed closely by Amanda Fink's 6-1, 6-0 victory over Steffi Wong at the No. 3 position to get USC a point away from securing the win. #9 Sarah Fansler answered, and locked away the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock at No. 2, getting USc ahead 4-0 in the match. Soon after that, Anca Anastasiu came through with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Diane Filip at No. 4 for a 5-0 USC advantage.
That left USC's No. 1 and No. 4 players still going, as Lindsey Nelson and #46 Dianne Matias both had pulled out 7-6 (1) wins in their respective first sets. Both made quick work of their second sets, however. Nelson, who had been behind in her first set before grabbing the tiebreaker decision, cruised right past Cal Poly's No. 1 Carol Erickson to notch a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win. Matias then rounded out her match by topping Shannon Brady 7-6 (1), 6-2 from their No. 4 slot.
No. 5 USC next faces San Diego State for a 12:30 p.m. match at Marks Stadium on Tuesday (Feb. 13), then travels to Northern California to face Stanford and California on Feb. 16 and 17.
