Stanford Travels to Waco to Face Baylor in HP Cup
Feb. 8, 2007
The Cardinal's rigorous schedule to open the 2007 season continues on Sunday, February 11 when Stanford travels to Waco, Texas to face the No. 8 Baylor in the first ever 'HP Cup.' The Cardinal, which has faced three nationally ranked teams to begin the season, is ranked No. 27 in the nation. The Bears beat the Stanford twice last season, including a 4-3 victory in the NCAA Quarter-finals that ended Stanford's season.
Sunday's match is being billed as the HP Cup. Hewlett Packard, of course, was founded by Stanford graduates William Hewlett and Bill Packard, and current CEO Mark Hurd is a former Baylor tennis player. A trophy will be presented to the winning school and a 60-minute highlight show from the match will be televised by the Tennis Channel at a later date.
'Baylor is truly one of the nation's top programs and we're looking forward to the challenge,' said Cardinal head coach John Whitlinger. 'I'm also excited about the HP Cup and the television coverage on the Tennis Channel. It will make for a very special event.'
'The partnership between Hewlett-Packard, Stanford, and Baylor is truly a unique and special one in the world of collegiate tennis,' said Baylor head coach Matt Knoll. 'Bringing these three great organizations together in this annual event will showcase the best of college tennis.'
Baylor knocked Stanford out of the NCAA Championship last year with a thrilling 4-3 win on May 21. The match, which was played at the San Francisco Tennis Center afer rain forced the match indoors, took almost six hours before the Bears battled back from a 3-1 deficit to win at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to secure the win.
Stanford, which went 18-4 a year ago, also lost to Baylor, 5-1, on Feb. 21, 2006.
Baylor has four players ranked among the Top 100: No. 17 Michael Kokta, No. 53 Dominik Mueller, No. 56 Lars Poerschke and No. 66 Denes Lukacs. Stanford's only national ranking is in doubles where Blake Muller and Paul Morrissey are ranked No. 32.
