SEATTLE - The Washington Husky men's tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season by beating No. 34 Middle Tennessee State 4-0 on Friday night in the first day of the Great Northwest Shootout. The No. 17 Huskies won the doubles point and the first three singles match to hand the Blue Raiders (5-2) their second lost of the season.

'The scoreboard will say 4-0,' said Head Coach Matt Anger, 'but the match was much closer than that. We expect close, tough matches all weekend.'

Washington jumped out to the 1-0 lead thanks to victories by the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams. The nationally-ranked No. 35 team of Patrik Fischer and Michael Ricks clinched the point for the Huskies with an 8-5 win. Daniel Chu and Derek Drabble also won 8-6, giving Chu his 70th career doubles win. Chu is now in a three-way tie with Dillon Ruby and Matt Hanlin for the fourth-most doubles wins in UW history.

Alex Slovic's attempt to become Washington's all-time doubles wins leader will have to wait for another day. Slovic and partner Andy Kuharszky lost in the No. 1 doubles matchup to the 16th-ranked doubles team of Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom. The Blue Raiders' duo, each standing 6-feet, 9-inches tall, won 8-6.

The Huskies carried their momentum from the doubles to the singles. Kuharszky, David Chu and Fischer won their singles matches to give the Huskies the 4-0 victory.

Kuharszky was the first to win, taking down Marc Rocafort 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match. Kuharszky improved to 4-1 in singles on the season.

Chu followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marc Roiron in the No. 5 singles to give the Huskies the 3-0 lead.

Fischer wrapped up the match in the No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Joao Pailiello. Fischer trailed 4-2 in the second set before rallying to take four-straight games, including breaking Pailiello for the match.

'He earned it,' said Anger about Fischer's first career dual match win. 'Both sets were back and forth, but thankfully he prevailed.'

The other three singles matches were halted after Fischer clinched. Slovic trailed one set love, but was leading in the second set over Siljestrom, while the other two matches were squared at one set apiece.

In the first match of the day, No. 56 Texas Tech (3-1) upset No. 42 Louisville (5-3). Texas Tech won 4-1, with Louisville's lone win coming in the No. 1 singles match where No. 71 Slavko Radman upset the highest-ranked player in the tournament, No. 12 Bojan Szumanski.

The Great Northwest Shootout continues tomorrow with the Huskies taking on Louisville at 2 p.m. Middle Tennessee State will take on Texas Tech in the first match of the day at 10 a.m.
