Feb. 9, 2007
Phoenix, Ariz. - The Cardinal softball team opened the 2007 season with a pair of wins today, cruising past Western Michigan and Utah on the first day of the Kajikawa Classic in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cardinal blew by the Broncos in five innings, 11-1, before topping the Utes 5-2.
Against Western Michigan, Stanford jumped on the board early when Maddy Coon doubled to right center in the first inning and knocked in Alissa Haber. The Cardinal blew the game open in the second inning, however, with seven runs on five hits. In her first at bat of the season, junior Erin Howe pounded a home run over the center field fence to give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead and soon after junior Amanda Beardman blasted a two-run home run to left field. Coon singled to right center to drive in her second RBI of the game, before a Michelle Smith hit brought in Jackie Rinehart. On Howe's second at bat of the inning, the Cardinal first baseman cracked a two-RBI double to increase the Cardinal lead to 8-0.
In the third inning, the Cardinal continued the offensive onslaught. Rinehart singled and Coon and Smith walked to load the bases for Missy Penna. The Cardinal sophomore drove in one run with her first hit of the season, and Howe's subsequent sacrifice fly drove in one more to increase the Stanford lead to 10-0.
The Cardinal added one more run in the fourth inning, when senior Lindsay Key hit a lead-off single and was driven in by Rinehart.
The Broncos managed to score one run in the top of the fifth inning, when Jenna Stuppy scored on a Cardinal error.
Howe led the team with two hits and four RBI. Junior Becky McCullough picked up her first win of the season in the circle, giving up just two hits in five innings.
Against Utah, freshman Rosey Neill put the Cardinal on top in the third inning, sending her first collegiate hit over the right field fence. Stanford added four more runs in the fourth inning, to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Rinehart doubled to start the inning, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Coon. Smith drove in Rinehart on a single to left field, and singles by Penna and Howe loaded the bases. Neill walked to bring in one run, and Aggabao's grounder to second base brought in another one. Howe added one more run for the Cardinal on an overthrow by the Ute catcher.
Utah made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on four hits. Hailey Davenport doubled to start the inning and pinch runner Tori Medina scored on a wild pitch. Catcher Andrea Hoffman registered the fifth Ute hit, advanced to third on a single by Karina Cannon and scored on another wild pitch. The effort was not enough to overtake the Cardinal, however, as the squad held on for a 5-2 win.
Rinehart led the Cardinal with two hits in the game, and Neill drive in two RBI. Penna picked up her first win of the season, and posted 10 strikeouts.
The Cardinal continues play at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow, taking on the No. 4 Northwestern Wildcats at 11 a.m. and the No. 17/18 Texas Longhorns at 1 p.m.
