Trojans Defeat No. 17 San Diego, 6-2

Feb. 9, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Senior catcher Johnny Bowden (Springfield, Ore./Chandler-Gilbert CC) went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI Friday as the USC Trojans defeated the No. 17 University of San Diego Toreros, 6-2, in nonconference action at Dedeaux Field. USC is now 4-2 overall while San Diego falls to 5-2 on the season.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Cook (Clovis/Clovis HS) lasted seven innings for the Trojans, allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. USC freshman Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) made his collegiate pitching debut and earned his first save with two innings, allowing only one hit with a strikeout.

San Diego starter Brian Matusz did not figure in the decision despite striking out 13 batters in six innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with two walks and now has 34 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings this season. Ricardo Pecina (1-1) took the loss for the Toreros, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Logan Gelbrich walked in the San Diego second and advanced to second on a balk called against Cook. Daniel Magness followed with a bloop single to center and with Gelbrich going on the pitch, Kevin Hansen laid down a sacrifice bunt to first for the first run of the game.

Hector Estrella led off the bottom half of the second with an infield single. He later moved to second on a passed ball charged to Gelbrich. Matusz struck out Darren Gemoll and Roberto Lopez before junior Will Rice (Houston, Texas/Tulane), in his first start of the season, laced a two-out double to left to tie the game at one apiece. Bowden made it a 2-1 lead in the fourth when he launched a solo home run over the fence in left field.

The Toreros tied it in the sixth after Jordan Abruzzo scored from second on Gelbrich's two-out double to right on a 2-2 pitch from Cook.

Pecina walked Gemoll and Lopez to lead off the USC seventh. When Lopez walked, pinch runner Spencer Pabst advanced to third when Gelbrich's throw sailed over the bag into center on ball four. On the following play, Gelbrich was charged with his second passed ball of the game to score Pabst. Rice then sacrificed Lopez to third and Nick Buss singled Lopez home with the drawn-in infield for a 4-2 Trojans' lead. USC added two more runs in the eighth on Bowden's RBI double and an RBI single by Lopez.

The series continues tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. start at Dedeaux Field. Sunday's game will be played at Cunningham Stadium in San Diego, beginning at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on
