Feb. 9, 2007

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - California freshman Stephanie Whalen took 11th place, the Golden Bears' highest finish, in the three-meter springboard preliminary at the Pac-10 Diving Championships on Friday afternoon at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Whalen had a scored of 235.25, while freshman teammate Samantha Young placed 16th (224.65) and freshman teammate Kristen Duffel (161.05) was 23rd. Only the top eight divers in the prelim advanced to the three-meter final.

'Stephanie did an awesome job,' Cal diving coach Tom Davidson said. 'She was very steady with what she did. She did a very good job. I was very pleased with her overall performance.

'Sam did a good job of fighting back but dug herself too big of a hole on a couple of dives.'

Stanford's Cassidy Krug had the top spot in the prelim with a score of 343.65.

The Pac-10 Diving Championships continues on Saturday with the women's one-meter springboard prelim from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The one-meter final is scheduled to run from 4-4:30 p.m. The women's side of the competition ends on Sunday, with the platform prelim running from 12:30-2 p.m. and the platform final running from 3:30-4 p.m.

'I think we'll do very well tomorrow,' Davidson said. 'They're going to come back, learn from today and do a very good job. One-meter is a stronger event for Sam Young, for Kristen and for Stephanie. I know they want to do better themselves. Tomorrow we'll see improved results.'
