No. 2 Men's Swimming Defeats No. 4 Cal 169-131, Complete Undefeated Dual Meet Season

In their final regular season meet of the season, No. 2 Stanford men's swimming defeated No. 4 Cal by a score of 169-131 at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Berkeley, CA. With the victory, the Cardinal men complete an undefeated dual meet season with a record of 5-0.

Cal jumped out to an early team lead with a victory in the 200 medley relay, while the Cardinal team posted a second place finish with a time of 1:26.60.

Stanford came right back in the second event as Shaun Phillips swam to a first place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 9:04.24.

In the 200 free, Cal claimed the top two spots, but Andy Grant was able to pick up valuable points for the Cardinal as he cam in third place with a time of 1:35.74.

Hougzhe Sun swam to gold for Stanford in the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.98, finishing ahead of two Cal swimmers who claimed second and third in the event.

The 200 butterfly was dominated by the Cardinal as they swept the top three spots. Paul Kornfeld captured first with a time of 53.91, Keenan Newman posted a 54.39 and a second place finish, with David Ash rounding out the top with a time of 55.05.

The sixth event of the day, the 200 butterfly, saw Cal snag the top spot. Jason Dunford was able to earn second place points for Stanford as he posted a 1:45.70, with Patrick Simpkins taking third for the Cardinal with a 1:46.88.

Stanford came alive, as they were able to take first in eight of the final ten events. The run began with Ben Wildman-Tobriner sprinting to victory in the 50 free with a time of 19.39.

Wildman-Tobriner continued his spectacular season taking the top spot in the 100 free as he posted a 43.30, finishing ahead of two Cal swimmers.

Hougzhe Sun showed his dominance in the backstroke once again, this time swimming to victory in the 200 backstroke, recording a time of 1:41.22. Andy Grant capped off the top three for Stanford with a 1:44.54.

For the second time in the meet Stanford finished with the top three swimmers in the breaststroke. This time the event was the 200 breaststroke and it was Paul Kornfeld claiming the top spot once again in a time of 1:57.46. David Ash and Nathan Cass rounded out the final two spots with 1:58.54 and 1:59.82, respectively.

Shaun Phillips kept the streak alive for the Cardinal with the fifth first place finish in a row. He swam to a time of 4:19.81 in the 500 free, while Daniel Beal posted a third place finish with a 4:24.24.

Jason Dunford managed to pick up points for Stanford in the 100 butterfly with a second place finish and a time of 47.18.

In the final individual event of the meet, Hougzhe Sun captured the top spot for the third time in the meet as he swam to a time of 1:46.40.

The day came to a fitting end as the Stanford 400 free relay 'A' team (Ben Wildman-Tobriner, Jason Dunford, Andy Grant, Matt Crowe) captured the final victory of the day in a time of 2:53.26. The Stanford 'B' team rounded out the top three in a time of 2:58.95.

Because of the meet coinciding with the Pac-10 Diving Championships, the Stanford men's diving competed against Cal during the women's Cal-Stanford match-up on Feb. 3. Sam Helvie of Cal took the top spot in the 1-meter dive posting a score of 329.70, while Dwight Dumais (279.97) and Kevin McLean (279.60) finished two-three for Stanford.

Dumais came back to capture first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 353.25. Mclean recorded a 274.20, good enough for a third place finish.

The Stanford swimmers return to the pool on Feb. 21-24 for the Pac-10 Championships in Federal Way, Wash.
