Arizona State's Katie Burkhart Named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Feb. 13, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE junior Katie Burkhart has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Burkhart recorded five wins out of Arizona State's blistering 8-0 start last week. The Sun Devils swept an opening doubleheader with Northwestern State and then cruised to six wins in the Kajikawa Classic which they hosted in Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State was named champions of the tournament by virtue of its top run differential.
A native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Burkhart made four starts and one relief appearance for the week. She started the season with a 20-inning scoreless streak, finally broken in the 2nd inning of ASU's 3-1 win over Ohio State on Feb. 11, Burkhart's fourth start of the year.
In her first start of the season against Northwestern State, Burkhart pitched a one-hit shutout, allowing only a single, walk, and a hit batter while striking out 11 of the 18 batters she faced in 5.0 innings.
On Feb. 11 vs. Long Beach State, the Sun Devils trailed 5-3 heading to the fifth inning when Burkhart came in from the bullpen and shut down Long Beach State the rest of the way, allowing just one hit and a walk and fanning six. The Sun Devils would rally to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, 6-5.
For the week, Burkhart went 5-0 and compiled an ERA of 0.31 in 29 innings pitched. She allowed only 14 hits out of 100 at-bats, struck out 57 batters and walked only seven.
Arizona State's strong first week resulted in a jump up the national rankings. The Sun Devils climbed to No. 2 in the Feb. 13 edition of the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 and picked up one first place vote. They are now the highest-ranked Pac-10 team. Arizona State will try to maintain their season-opening run this week as they host the Littlewood Classic, playing five times from Fri., Feb. 16-Sun., Feb. 18 at Farrington Stadium.
This is Burkhart's fourth career Pitcher of the Week award and the 47th all-time for Arizona State. Burkhart's teammate Kaitlin Cochran was also chosen as Pac-10 Player of the Week, marking the first time ASU has taken both awards in the same week since Mar. 15, 2005 when Sharee Zaleski won Player and Burkhart was chosen as the top pitcher.
