Feb. 13, 2007

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA STATE sophomore Kaitlin Cochran has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Feb. 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

The 2006 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year and reigning Pac-10 batting champion played a rude host last week, punishing opposing pitchers at the Kajikawa Classic which kicked off the 2007 season for many teams in Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils were 8-0 on their home field including a doubleheader sweep of Northwestern State and a were named champions of the Kajikawa Classic by virtue of their 6-0 record and top run differential.

Cochran, a native of Yorba Linda, Calif., had a hit in seven of the eight games and reached base safely in every outing. The sophomore slugger was 12-25 for an average of .480 and powered two home runs, two doubles and nine RBI while scoring five runs. Cochran also showed more aggression on the basepaths, stealing five bases without being caught after swiping 12 in 17 attempts her entire freshman year.

Against Ohio State on Feb. 11, Cochran turned in her best performance, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI in a close 3-1 win for ASU.

Last season as just a freshman, Cochran led the Pac-10 in batting average (.437), slugging percentage (.789), on-base percentage (.547), hits (83), and total bases (150).

Arizona States strong first week resulted in a jump up the national rankings. The Sun Devils climbed to No. 2 in the Feb. 13 edition of the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top-25 and picked up one first place vote. They are now the highest-ranked Pac-10 team. Arizona State will try to maintain their season-opening run this week as they host the Littlewood Classic, playing five times from Fri., Feb. 16-Sun., Feb. 18 at Farrington Stadium.

This is Cochran's second career Player of the Week award and the 47th all-time for Arizona State. Cochrans previous win was also the initial POTW honor given last season. Cochrans teammate Katie Burkhart was also chosen as Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, marking the first time ASU has taken both awards in the same week since Mar. 15, 2005 when Sharee Zaleski won Player and Burkhart was chosen as the top pitcher.
