Women's Swimming Set To Compete At Pac-10 Championships

SEATTLE-- The University of Washington women's swimming team (3-3, 1-2 Pac-10) will compete at the Pacific-10 Swimming and Diving Championships this week in Long Beach, Calif., at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The meet will run Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 14-17 with preliminary races beginning at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Stanford is hosing the event.

Nine Pac-10 schools will battle it out for the Pac-10 title, including Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State.

Six Pac-10 schools are ranked in the top-25, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 California, No. 4 Arizona, No. 14 USC, No. 16 UCLA and No. 23 Arizona State.

Event results will be posted on the Pac-10's web site (www.pac-10.org), as well as on Stanford's web site (www.gostanford.cstv.com).

Three Huskies have combined for three NCAA consideration times this season, including junior Jessica Buchanan (200 breaststroke) and sophomore Kim Jasmer (200, 500 freestyle).

Buchanan, a two-time NCAA participant, ranks second and third on the UW all-time top-10 lists in the 100 (1:03.10) and 200 breaststroke events (2:15.03).

Jasmer is the school record holder in the 500 (4:46.50) and 1000 freestyles (9:53.35) and ranks third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.10), seventh in the 100 (51.16) and 1650 freestyle (16:54.50), and eighth in the 50 freestyle (23.73).

Washington will look to junior Rachel Seely in the sprint freestyle events as she ranks third on the UW all-time list in the 50 freestyle (23.38) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (51.08).

Sophomore Mary Patterson headlines the backstroke corps and ranks seventh on the UW all-time list in the 100 backstroke (56.81), while sophomore Marisa Chang and freshman Erin Campbell lead the butterfliers. Chang ranks fifth and seventh on the all-time list in the 100 (56.14) and 200 breaststroke (2:02.64), respectively, while Campbell ranks eighth on the 100 fly all-time list (56.58).

Washington's top IMer, Caitlin Shortt, is out with mono so the Huskies will look to Maggie Bever and Jennifer Gong. Bever has the team's fastest time of the season in the 200 IM (2:06.12), while Gong has the fastest time in the 400 IM (4:29.78).

Last season, Washington finished eighth at the Pac-10 Championships with 414 points. Arizona won the meet with 1,325 points, followed by UCLA (1,246.5), Stanford (1,227), USC (1,162.5), California (1,082.5), Arizona State (670.5), Oregon State (483.5). The Huskies did out-swim Washington State who placed ninth with 399 points.

Washington's lone senior, Blythe Murray, will be swimming in her final conference championship.
