Feb. 15, 2007
The 16th-ranked UCLA Bruin swim team stands in fourth-place with 359 points after day two of the Pac-10 Swim Championships as senior Katie Nelson led the team with an NCAA automatic qualifier in the 500 Freestyle. Stanford stands in first-place with 546.5 points.
'We had a great day today, especially the finals session tonight with a started it off by swimming a lifetime-best in the 500 Free to win the console final (a time that would have gotten 4th place in the final). Jane Imagane also had a great swim in the consolation finals. Silke (Nowotzin) and Julie (Imagane) both swam faster in the finals then in the prelims.'
Nelson swam a lifetime-best and NCAA automatic qualifier in the 500 Freestyle, swimming 4:44.49 to finish ninth overall (winning the A Console). Her previous lifetime-best was 4:45.23. Senior Jane Imagane, also swimming in the A Console, finished 14th with an NCAA 'B' qualifier of 4:51.32. Sophomore Silke Nowotzin also swam a 'B' qualifier, finishing 22nd in a lifetime-best of 4:53.60, while freshman Julie Imagane finished 23rd in a time of 4:54.57.
Junior Chiemi Yamamoto just missed her lifetime-best in the 200 IM (2:03.64), swimming 2:03.76 to finish 16th overall. The time was also an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. In the console bonus of the 200 IM, seniors Isabel Miesner (2:02.71) and Jeana Fuccillo (2:04.03) finished 18th and 22nd, respectively as both were NCAA 'B' qualifying times.
'The 200 IM was another great event for us. Chiemi swam a lifetime-best in the prelims to get into the consolation finals tonight. Isabel was 18th with a lifetime-best and Jeana, coming off a lifetime-best last night in the 100 Breast time trial (1:02.78), also had a good swim tonight.'
Senior Katie Arnold finished ninth in the 50 Free, swimming a 'B' qualifier of 22.87, while sophomore Anna Poteete was 10th in a time of 22.93, also a 'B' qualifier. Senior Amy Thurman also swam a 'B' time of 22.90 to finish 17th overall. All three times were lifetime-bests.
'The 50 Free was an incredibly fast event for the Pac-10's,' added Gallagher. 'The UCLA Bruins stepped up as all three of the sprinters swam lifetime-bests and under 23 seconds.'
In the final event of the night, the 200 Free Relay, the team of Arnold, Poteete, Thurman and junior Katherine Wong placed fifth in a 'B' qualifying time of 1:32.03.
