Vollmer Ties for 50-Free Crown at Pac-10 Championships
Feb. 15, 2007
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - California sophomore Dana Vollmer swam a blistering 22.05 to tie Arizona's Lara Jackson for first place in the 50-yard freestyle final on Thursday at the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. For Vollmer, who clocked the fastest time (22.57) in the 50-free prelim earlier today, the 22.05 was a lifetime best. The Golden Bears also set a school record of 1:29.49 to take third in the final event of the night, the 200-freestyle relay.
The updated team standings are as yet unavailable, though Cal led the meet after yesterday's two races.
The Cal A foursome of sophomore Jessica Hardy, junior Emily Silver, senior Erin Reilly and Vollmer just missed a tie for second place in the relay; Stanford swam a 1:29.48 (NCAA A) as the runner-up to Arizona (1:28.71, NCAA A). The Bears' 1:29.49, an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championships, surpassed the 1:31.35 record that Cal had set on Dec. 1, 2006, at the Georgia Invitational.
Vollmer's 22.05 was also an NCAA A cut and moved her into second place on Cal's all-time list for the 50 free. Her time was just four hundredths of a second off of Natalie Coughlin's school record of 22.01, set in 2003. Also in the 50 free, Silver swam a career-record 22.23 for fifth place. That time ties Silver with Haley Cope for third on the Bears' all-time list.
Freshman Blake Hayter took fifth in the first race of the night, the 500 free, swimming a lifetime-best 4:45.87 (NCAA B) that put her eighth all-time at Cal. Reilly was eighth in the final, with a time of 4:49.10. The senior had set her career best in the 500 free when she took second place with a 4:45.49 (NCAA B) in the prelim earlier today. Stanford's Elizabeth Durot won the 500-free final in 4:41.47 (NCAA A).
Bears senior Sherry Tsai had Cal's best finish in the 200 individual medley, swimming a lifetime-best 1:59.63 (NCAA A) to take fifth place and move to fifth-place on Cal's all-time list. Freshman teammate Courtney Eronemo was seventh in the 200 IM final in a lifetime-best 2:01.73 (NCAA B). Stanford's Julia Smit won the race in 1:55.38 (NCAA A).
The Pac-10 Championships continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
