Feb. 16, 2007
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Third-ranked California won four out of five preliminary races on Friday at the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Golden Bears sophomore Dana Vollmer tied Arizona's Elaine Breeden in the 100-yard butterfly, junior teammate Emily Silver won the 200 freestyle, sophomore teammate Jessica Hardy won the 100 breaststroke and sophomore teammate Lauren Rogers won the 100 backstroke, qualifying each Bear for tonight's finals.
Overall, nine Bears qualified for tonight's championships finals, which begin at 6 p.m., and seven Bears qualified for the consolation finals.
Along with tying Breeding, Vollmer tied her lifetime- and Cal's season-best 52.11 in the 100 fly today. Coincidentally, the first time Vollmer swam 52.11, which is an automatic NCAA Championships qualifying time, in the 100 fly was in a Feb. 3 loss to Breeden in Berkeley.
Cal went 1-2 in the 200 free, with Silver swimming a lifetime-best 1:46.12 (NCAA A) to capture the race and senior teammate Erin Reilly swimming a season-best 1:46.18 (NCAA A). Silver's time moves her up from ninth to sixth place on Cal's all-time fastest 200 free list.
Hardy, who holds the nation's fastest time in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.75, swam a 1:00.93 (NCAA A) on Friday. Senior teammate Annie Babicz took eighth place in 2:02.44 (NCAA B).
Rogers swam a lifetime-best and Cal season-best 53.99 (NCAA A) in winning the 100 back. That time puts Rogers in fifth place on Cal's all-time list.
In the 400 individual medley, the only other race today, Cal junior Rachel Ridgeway took second place in a Cal season-best time of 4:15.82 (NCAA A), which is just two hundredths of a second off of Ridgeway's lifetime best. Stanford's Julia Smith won the 400 IM in 4:11.92 (NCAA A). Bears freshman Heather White (4:18.15, NCAA B) and Courtney Eronemo (4:18.38, NCAA B) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with lifetime-best times in the prelim to reach the 400 IM final.
Cal junior Leann Toomey (54.67, NCAA B, 9th place) and Babicz (54.98, NCAA B, 12th) reached tonight's consolation final with their season-best times in the 100 fly. Three Bears - freshman Lauren Boyle (1:49.05, NCAA B, 12th), senior Lauren Andrews (1:49.14, NCAA B, 13th) and freshman Blake Hayter (1:49.94, NCAA B, 16th) - reached the consolation final of the 200 free.
In the 100 breaststroke, Cal freshman Alexandra reached the consolation final with an 11th-place finish (1:02.89, NCAA B), and senior teammate Sherry Tsai just missed the championship final in the 100 back with a ninth-place finish (54.76). Eighth place in the 100 back went to swimmer with a 54.73.
After tonight's finals, the Pac-10 Championships conclude on Saturday, with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m.
