Cal Wins 5 Titles on Day 3 of Pac-10 Championships
Feb. 16, 2007
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Third-ranked California won five titles during Friday night's finals after winning four preliminary races earlier in the day at the Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Three sophomores - Dana Vollmer in the 100-yard butterfly, Jessica Hardy in the 100 breaststroke and Lauren Rogers in the 100 backstroke - and one junior - Emily Silver in the 200 freestyle - won individual races and then combined for the winning 400-medley relay for the Golden Bears.
Team standings for the meet are not yet available.
Vollmer won the 100-yard butterfly, her second title in as many nights, in a lifetime best of 50.80, an NCAA Championships automatic qualifying time (NCAA A). Her time surpasses her previous lifetime best of 52.11 and ranks her second behind former Bears great Natalie Coughlin, who swam a 50.01, on Cal's all-time list in the 100 fly.
Silver swam a 1:44.37 (NCAA A) to beat second-placed senior teammate Erin Reilly (1:44.93, NCAA A) and also move past Reilly for second place on Cal's all-time list in the 200 free.
Hardy, the defending NCAA champion in the 100 breaststroke, clocked a 59.56 (NCAA A) to claim her first Pac-10 title. Her time was just five hundredths of a second off of her lifetime-best and Cal school-record 59.51.
Rogers swam a 53.48 (NCAA A), ranking her fifth on Cal's all-time list, in the 100 back to capture her first individual Pac-10 crown. She was also on the Bears' winning 800-free relay last season at the conference meet.
Cal junior Rachel Ridgeway swam a Cal season-best 4:13.12 (NCAA A) to take third place in the 400 individual medley. It was the Bears' fastest time in the 400 IM since Coughlin swam a 4:11.76 in 2003 and ranks Ridgeway third, behind Coughlin and Elli Overton (4:11.52), on Cal's all-time list.
In the last race of the night, Rogers, Hardy, Vollmer and Silver recorded a 3:32.95 (NCAA A) to win the 400-medley relay. That time is just four tenths of a second off of Cal's school record of 3:32.55, set in 2002.
The Pac-10 Championships conclude on Saturday, with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tomorrow's prelims include the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breaststroke and 200 fly, while the finals will include the 400-free relay.
