Feb. 16, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore right-hander Ryan Cook (Clovis/Clovis HS) threw his first career complete game Friday as the USC Trojans defeated the San Diego State Aztecs, 7-3, in a nonconference game at Dedeaux Field. Cook allowed three runs (two unearned) on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Nick Romero led San Diego State (5-3) with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Donnie Hume (2-1) took the loss for the Aztecs after giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in five innings with a walk and seven strikeouts.
After Hume recorded four strikeouts through two innings, the Trojans scored three runs in the third. Estrella led off with a bunt single to third, followed by a single to right by Roberto Lopez. Sophomore Nick Buss (Clinton Township, Mich./San Diego Mesa CC) then laced a two-run double to left center, scoring later himself on an RBI single by Cusick.
The Aztecs got two runs back in the fourth when catcher Frank LoNigro hit a two-run double down the left field line, scoring center fielder Brandon Glover and Romero for a 3-2 USC lead. The Trojans took charge of the game after that with two runs in the fourth. Lucas Duda led off with a double to right center. After being sacrificed to third by Hector Rabago, Duda scored on Estrella's RBI single. Estrella then stole second and Glover mishandled the overthrow from LoNigro which allowed Estrella to score.
Cusick added his second RBI of the game in the fifth when he scored Grant Green on a single after Green led off the inning with a triple.
The series moves to San Diego tomorrow with a 6 p.m. start on Saturday (Feb. 17) and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday (Feb. 18). Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
