Cardinal Edges Santa Clara to Advance to Stanford Invitational Championship

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 12/13 Stanford softball team slipped past the Santa Clara Broncos today, with a 4-3 victory at Smith FamilyStadium. The Broncos scored three unearned runs, but a pair of RBI by Rosey Neill helped the Cardinal improve to 8-2on the season and 4-0 in the tournament. Santa Clara drops to 0-9 with the loss.
Santa Clara was on the board first, after lead-off hitter Jackie Morales singled and eventually scored on aCardinal error.
Stanford put a three-run rally together in the bottom of the first inning. Aliss Haber doubled to lead off the inningand scored on the same play after an outfield error by the Broncos. Jackie Rinehart and Maddy Coon reached on a singleand a walk, respectively, and were driven in by a single up the middle by Neill.
Santa Clara came back to tie in the second inning, however, picking up two runs on two hits. Meghan Chavez hit alead-off single, stole second base and advanced to third on a hit by Noelani Hoopii. With runners on the corners andtwo out, Morales reached on an error and two more unearned runs scored for the Broncos.
Stanford scored the eventual game-winner on a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tricia Aggabao singledto start the series and freshman Shannon Koplitz drove her around with her first career hit.
Stanford will face the Pacific-Missouri winner in the Stanford Invitational Championship tomorrow at noon. Santa Clarawill face the Pacific-Missouri loser in a consolation game at 10 a.m.
