Cougars Swept by Arizona State, 7-0

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State women's tennis team (8-2 overall, 0-2 Pac-10) was swept by the No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils (6-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-10), 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after sweeping the Cougars in doubles play. Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke, nationally-ranked eighth, defeated WSU's pair of Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven, 8-4.
Arizona State secured the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. In singles play, ASU's Sabrina Capannolo defeated WSU's Burduli in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 1 slot.
Seniors Amy Toth and van de Ven suffered similar fates in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Nadia Abdala got the best of Toth capturing the 6-3, 6-4 victory. Clarke earned the singles victory over van de Ven, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0. van de Ven suffered her first dual match loss of the season, but still has a team-leading record of 17-5.
ASU captured wins in the final three slots to complete the sweep against the Cougars.
WSU returns to the courts as it travels to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks, Saturday, Feb. 24, at noon.
