Men's Golf Team Prepares for Season Openers

The UCLA men's golf team, ranked fifth nationally, prepares to begin its Spring season this week with a pair of tournaments on opposite coasts.
The Gold team will play in the John Hayt Collegiate, hosted by the University of North Florida at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Feb. 17-19.
The Blue team will compete in the Cougar Invitational, hosted by Cal State San Marcos at San Luis Rey Downs in Bonsall, CA, Feb. 19-20.
'We could not be more excited to start the Spring season,' said Head Coach O. D. Vincent. 'We are the defending champions at the John Hayt Collegiate, and we are very much looking forward to defending our title.'
Competing for the Gold team will be senior Peter Campbell, juniors Daniel Im and Kevin Chappell, and sophomores Erik Flores and James Lee. The players in this fivesome have won five tournaments in their collegiate careers.
Campbell will be making his first start with the Gold squad in 16 months. He has two collegiate victories to his credit -- the Carson Daly Invitational in his freshman year and the Gold Rush Classic in his sophomore season. He enters this event averaging 72.6 in six rounds in the Fall.
Chappell also enters this event with a scoring average of 72.6. Last year he won the NCAA East Regional title at Lake Noma in Orlando. Classmate Daniel Im brings a scoring average of 72.7 and two career victories: the 2006 Pac-10 title and the 2005 Southern Highlands Collegiate.
Flores led the Bruins as a freshman with a 72.1 scoring average and four runner-up finishes. He earned 2nd Team GCAA All-America honors in 2006. He enters this tournament with a scoring average of 73.3 and a pair of Top 10 finishes. Classmate James Lee leads the Gold team with a 72.1 scoring average and three straight Top 25 finishes in the Fall.
Heintz leads the team with 115 career rounds played. Last year he won the Braveheart Claasic and recorded three other Top 10 finishes, including a tie for sixth at the Pac-10 Championship. He enters the Cougar Invitational with a scoring average of 73.4.
Leslie enters this event with a 73.0 scoring average and a tie for fifth place at the Husky Invitational in September. As a sophomore, he recorded his first collegiate victory by winning the Pala Mesa Invitational.
Lucas Lee won twice last season and earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors as a freshman. He enters the first Spring event with a scoring average of 72.0, a team best.
In the Fall, Kang recorded his first collegiate Top 10 finish, placing second at the Santa Clara Invitational. Harris tied for 20th at the same event to record his first Top 20 finish. Kang begins the Spring with a 72.1 average and Harris's stroke average is 74.8.
'Overall, we have a lot to be excited about,' said Vincent. 'Our depth is incredible and [team qualifying] was very intense.'
