Silver Wins 100-Free Prelim at Pac-10 Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - California junior Emily Silver won the 100-yard freestyle preliminary on Saturday and third-ranked Cal qualified eight Golden Bears for tonight's championship finals at the Pac-10 Championships held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Silver swam an automatic NCAA Championships qualifying time (NCAA A) of 48.80 in the prelim to take the top seed in the 100 free final for the Bears, who enter the final night of the conference meet in third place.
Sophomore teammate Jessica Hardy swam a lifetime-best 49.21 (NCAA A) to take third in the 100 free.
Three Bears qualified in the 200 butterfly, with senior Erin Reilly taking second in a lifetime- and Cal season-best 1:56.80 (NCAA A), junior Rachel Ridgeway claiming third in 1:57.19 (NCAA A) and sophomore Dana Vollmer finishing fourth in 1:57.51 (NCAA A).
In the 200 breaststroke, Cal freshman Alexandra Ellis was third in 2:13.65 (NCAA A).
The Pac-10 Championships conclude on Saturday night, with finals beginning at 6 p.m. Tonight's finals will include the 1650 free and 400-free relay. The conference meet will also factor in the results of the platform final from the Pac-10 Diving Championships in tonight's scoring.
