Soni, McGregory Each Post 2nd-Place Finishes On Pac-10 Championships Final Day
Feb. 17, 2007
Sophomore Rebecca Soni and junior Hayley McGregory finished second in the 200y breast and 200y back, respectively, to highlight the No. 14 USC women's swimming team's efforts on the final day of the 2007 Pac-10 Women's Swimming Championships on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
Soni, the 2006 defending champion in both breaststroke distances, took second in both races this year. She swam a 2:09.92 in tonight's 200y breast final, finishing behind only Stanford's Caroline Bruce (2:09.32). Soni was only 0.03 off the pace with 50 yards to go, but couldn't match Bruce down the stretch. Soni is still among the fastest in the country and will defend her NCAA title in the race in two weeks.
McGregory finished second in the 200y back for the second straight season at the Pac-10s, this time in 1:56.97, a season best and NCAA automatic qualifying time.
In the timed final of the 1650y free, junior Brittany Allen finished a career-best fourth in 16:20.24. The time was an NCAA automatic qualifying time and almost 10 seconds faster than her previous personal best. She has finished among the top 7 in the event in her three Pac-10 Championships.
Junior Whitney Hentzen finished right behind Allen, taking fifth in 16:21.80. Like Allen, her time was an NCAA automatic qualifying time, a personal best by far and marked her highest Pac-10 Championships finish. UCLA's Katie Nelson won the race in 16:09.08. USC freshman Kristina Rigterink's 10th-place 16:37.34 was also a season best, greatly improving upon her NCAA consideration time.
Sophomore Katy Houston joined Soni in the 200y breast final, finishing seventh in 2:16.31, marking her highest finish in a Pac-10 Championships race.
Freshman Dina Hegazy reached the consolation final of the 200y back, taking 13th in a season-best 2:00.32.
The USC men's swimming team will compete in the 2007 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships Wednesday through Saturday (Feb. 21-24) in Federal Way, Wash.
