USC Posts 66-42 Win Over Arizona On Senior Day
Feb. 17, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's basketball team had all five of its senior starters score on Senior Day at the Galen Center, as the Trojans closed down their regular-season home schedule with a 66-42 win over visiting Arizona on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Shay Murphy led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds in her 26 minutes of play for her 25th game in double figures this season. Sophomore center Nadia Parker was next with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Trojans, and Arizona had Ashley Whisonant wind up as its only player in double digits with 10 points. USC improves to 16-10 overall and 10-6 in Pac-10 play, while Arizona moves to 10-19, 4-13.
After a spotty shooting effort in the first half, USC opened the second half of play with an 11-2 run in the first four minutes and led 50-27 with 10 minutes to go in the game thanks in part to an 11-0 run by the Women of Troy. With the 24 percent shooting percentage of the first half well behind it, USC upped its scoring mark to 40 percent as it worked its way ahead 62-35 as the final five minutes of action approached. All told, USC had nine different players score in the game -- an achievement hit eight times this season. It was the first win where USC had just two players hit double figures, but the Trojans' 47-31 rebounding advantage and a feisty defensive effort that forced the Wildcats to a season-low 42 points kept the Women of Troy with the upper hand down the stretch. USC shot 56 percent in the second half and was 43 percent from 3-point range in the second after failing to hit a three in the first half.
It was a slow scoring day on both ends through the first 10 minutes of action, as USC led just 10-7 as the 10-minute mark came and went in the first half. A low score from Simone Jelks was followed by a pair of free throws from Jamie Hagiya and a bucket from Nadia Parker to lift USC on a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead before Ashley Whisonant knocked down a free throw at 4:40. Joy Hollingsworth drained a long three next for the Wildcats to make it 16-13 USC at 3:55 and then answered a pair of Hagiya free throws with a long two to make it 18-15 USC entering the last three minutes of the first half. The Trojans were shooting just 20 percent from the floor at that point but had some help from an 8-for-10 effort at the free-throw line to keep the upper hand. Arizona's shooting effort dropped to 27 pecent with another miss low, as Hagiya went back to the line in bonus. The senior knocked down both to go up 20-15 until Arizona managed two scores off USC turnovers to make it a one-point game at 20-19 with 1:34 on the clock. Jamie Funn delivered low for the Trojans next to make it 22-19 and a jumper from Shay Murphy got USC up 24-19 before the halftime buzzer.
To open the next half, Murphy drained a pair of free throws and then a 3-pointer to boost USC ahead 29-19 less than a minute into the second half. That pushed the senior into double figures for the 50th time in the past 51 games. Funn followed up an Arizona bucket with a jumper of her own to hold that 10-point advantage for the Trojans. Two free throws from Kerr and a runner from Medlock pushed USC ahead 35-21. Kerr then followed a pair of Whisonant free throws with a fast break layup and then Jelks drilled a jumper. Arizona broke a trend of missed shots in the paint with a pair of low scores, but later Allison Jaskowiak blasted a 3-pointer at 11:55 for the Women of Troy to get USC ahead 44-27, becoming the fifth senior starter to score for the Trojans in the game. Nadia Parker busted out a jumper from the top of the key and then Aarika Hughes followed suit, and USC was up 48-27 as the 10-minute mark approached. Arizona's scoring drought ended up lasting almost five minutes until Pace slipped in a layup to end an 11-0 run by the Women of Troy. A long three from Murphy padded the Trojan lead to 55-32 at 7:30. A three-point play from Nadia Parker ballooned USC's lead to 62-35 as the teams entered the final five minutes of action. USC's sixth senior on the roster, Kristen Travers, then grabbed a defensive board for the Trojans to help get the Women of Troy on their way to a 66-42 victory.
USC now enters its final regular-season Pac-10 action with a trip to Northern California. The Trojans first face California for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday (Feb. 22) and then pay a visit to Stanford for a 12 p.m. televised game on Sunday (Feb. 25).
