Cardinal Storms Back to Beat Miami, 4-3

Feb. 18, 2007

Stanford roared back from a 3-1 deficit to beat Miami 4-3 at the ITA National Indoor Championships today at the Midtown Tennis Center in Chicago to record its first win of the season. Freshman Paul Morrissey clinched the match with a 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Morrissey's victory came after fellow freshman Kevin Kaiser and Richard Wire won their matches to tie the score at 3-3.

The Cardinal, ranked No. 28 in the nation and seeded 15th in the tournament, is now 1-6 on the season. Miami, seeded 14th in the tournament, is ranked No. 26.

Stanford won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles, but the Hurricane's won the first three singles matches to take a commanding 3-1 lead. Then, it was up to the Cardinal freshmen to bring their team back. And they did.

After Miami's three consecutive, straight set wins, Wire, Morrissey and Kaiser each won the first set in their singles matches as the Cardinal's freshmen attempted to bring their team its first victory of the season.

The Hurricanes tied the score at 1-1 when Josh Cohen beat Blake Muller at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. It was 2-1 Miami after Matt Bruch lost at No. 1 singles to Luigi D'Argord, 6-3, 6-3, and the Hurricanes made it 3-1 when Vivek Subramanian defeated Eric McKean, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

But the Cardinal was still in the match as Wire won his first set 7-5 and Kaiser and Morrissey each won 7-6 tie-breaks in their opening sets.

Kaiser was the first Stanford freshman to close out his match. He beat Hector Nieto 7-5, 7-6 to bring the Cardinal within a point at 3-2. Wire took three sets to win his match at No. 2 singles, defeating Daniel Vallverdu 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, tying the score at 3-3 and setting the stage for Morrissey's deciding match at No. 6 singles.

For the second day in a row, the Cardinal won the doubles point and took a 1-0 lead into singles play. Stanford won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and led at No. 2 as it put together its best round of doubles in the three-day tournament. Eric McKean and Jeff Zeller beat Hector Nieto and Barnabas Carrega of Miami, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles, followed by an 8-5 win at No. 1 when Matt Bruch and Blake Muller defeated the Hurricane's Josh Cohen and Luigi D'Argord.

Stanford returns to action this weekend when the Cardinal host Arizona State on Friday, Feb. 23 and Arizona on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Taube Tennis Center.
