San Diego State Salvages Series With 12-11 Win Over USC
Feb. 18, 2007
SAN DIEGO - Joe Spiers' infield single in the bottom of the ninth gave the San Diego State Aztecs a 12-11 victory over the USC Trojans in nonconference action Sunday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs won the game after USC had rallied with four runs in the ninth.
Spiers, who was hitting .050 on the season at the time of his at-bat, hit a high chopper up the middle. Matt Cusick made a play, but his throw home was late as Garett Green scored the winning run. Ironically, it was Garett's brother (USC shortstop Grant Green) who allowed Green to get on base in the ninth with a throwing error. Green stole second after Chris Anderson struck out before scoring the game-winner.
USC (7-5) scored four times in the ninth after the Trojans scored three in the ninth during Saturday's 5-4 victory. The Trojans loaded the bases and sophomore Anthony Vasquez blasted a three-run double to center, followed by Grant Green's single to left to tie the game at 11-11.
San Diego State earned its lone win of the series and is now 6-4 overall.
The Green brothers each homered in the contest as Grant Green went 3-for-6 with two RBI for the Trojans. J.J. Owen hit a career-high four RBI for USC with two doubles and a three-run homer in the third.
USC had a 5-1 lead in the third before the Aztecs scored six runs in the bottom half of the third. Troy Hanzawa and Brandon Glover had back-to-back RBI singles off USC's Tommy Milone, followed by Frank LoNigro's two-run double to left and Garett Green's two-run blast to left center to take the 7-5 lead. Hanzawa finished the day with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with three RBI. Cameron Johnson also had three hits for the Aztecs.
Milone gave up nine runs on 11 hits for the Trojans in four innings while SDSU starter Lance Sewell gave up five runs on six hits in three innings of work. Freshman Hector Rabago pitched three innings for the Trojans, allowing just one run on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts while Paul Koss (1-1) was the hard-luck loser in giving up an unearned run.
USC hosts St. Paul University (Japan) in a noon exhibition tomorrow before resuming regular season play on Tuesday (Feb. 20) against UC Irvine in a 6 p.m. start at Dedeaux Field. Tuesday's game will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
